First off, look at that cover. It's gorgeous and fits the book so perfectly. I was lucky enough to read this before it came out and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like reworkings of fairy tales and Rapunzel has always been a favorite of mine. Cindy did a great job with this. The characters were interesting and well-developed. She managed to move this story into modern day without it being hokey or silly.

Rapunzel in Seattle

Rapunzel Untangled was reviewed on Thursday in the Seattle Post Intelligencer! Joanna Celeste of blogcritics.org had this to say:

 

A brilliant retelling of the classic fairy tale, Rapunzel Untangled gives an old story a modern twist that often had me laughing.

Bennett's "Author's Note" at the outset gives us the heads-up that this yarn will be a unique adventure, and it truly is.

In this alternate universe, Rapunzel is a girl who lives alone with her mother, marooned to the world by an illness that makes her über-susceptible to germs. (She's not quite forced into a bubble, but it's close.)

Her only connection to the outside is via the Internet, which was necessary for her homeschooling projects. One fateful day, Rapunzel Facebook-friends a stranger named Fab Fane Flannigan.

Their budding friendship shifts her world, introducing her to wondrous things like M&Ms, and she can't go back to the way things were before.

The sweet romance is especially touching when Rapunzel might just be killed by a kiss, and her tenderness with Fab Fane is expressed in other ways.

But her mother has a reason to keep her safe-keep her hidden-that has nothing whatsoever to do with Rapunzel's best interests.

This is a YA, though [vague spoilers for those interested in adult subject matter] there are some scary scenes, a short imprisonment and a starvation-deprivation-torture sequence-it wasn't graphic but mildly psychologically terrifying-appropriate for 13+?

I love that this retelling of Rapunzel, Untangled is so refreshingly different from the original story that it's impossible to know how the story ends. It was hard to put the book down, and when the climax approached I had no idea what to expect. Will love conquer evil, or will Rapunzel meet her destiny-and possibly her death?

As someone who enjoys good fairy tales, this story was a real treat.

Tide Ever Rising Blog Hop

My review of Tide Ever Rising by Mandi Tucker Slack:

Kadie and her more reserved sister Maysha accidentally run across a really amazing find (the journal) when they’re traipsing through some old, abandoned, falling down houses in the nearly abandoned town of Eureka, Utah. Deciding to follow the clues given in the journal, Kadie discovers not only more secrets and mysteries than she could have imagined, but she also meets the dashingly aloof Logan and his little daughter, Zahara.

I enjoyed the first part of the book while Kadie and Maysha are tracking down people from the journal, as well as some of the characters they came across in their quest. I have to admit, though, the book really came alive for me when Kadie and Logan unexpectedly find themselves stranded alone in the wilderness. For me, that was when Kadie really showed a backbone, learned a lot about herself and what she really desires from life. I quickly became a fan of Kadie and Logan and rooted for them to get together—in spite of Kadie’s fiancé Robert, who to me was kind of a stick-in-the-mud.

I’m a fan of Mandy Slack. I really enjoyed her first book, The Alias. As much as I liked that book, I think I like Tide Ever Rising even more. She has the ability to create characters who get under your skin and in your heart, and unforgettable stories. I look forward to reading more from Mandy in the future.

About the author:

Mandi Tucker Slack grew up in Orangeville, UT, where her father worked as a coal miner for eighteen years. In 1987 the coal mines shut down for a time and her father joined the U.S. Army. They were stationed in Hanau, Germany, and she had the opportunity to explore Europe. Mandi’s family returned to Utah in 1992, and they settled in Orangeville once again, where she attended and completed High School. She then attended the College of Eastern Utah, where she studied Geology. Eventually Mandi changed her major and moved on to Utah State University while she completed a degree in Special Education. She then married her best friend, Charles Slack. They have three children, with one on the way, 6 chickens, and a lizard (sometimes several lizards).Their family loves to spend time together. They enjoy 4-wheeling, camping, and especially rock hounding. Her house is littered with rocks and fossils. As a child Mandi spent many weekends with her parents and sister exploring abandoned mining towns and searching for relics among the brick ruins. Her adventures with her family are often the inspiration for her stories. Mandi is also the author of romantic/ suspense title, The Alias, available at a bookstore near you.
