The Experiment: Excerpt 9

In conjunction with the blog tour for The Experiment, I'll be posting an excerpt daily from the book. You can see the schedule for the tour here. Here's today's excerpt:

Emiah
The Lurker that approached Cil was a giant, even taller than Brax. The Lurker froze, staring at Cil. He licked his lips and looked over his shoulder. “Oh, you’re a pretty one,” the man whispered. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Where are your friends, my cuteness?” He took a step forward and Cil slid away.
“I’ll scream if you come close.”
“It’s dark out here, cuteness. So easy to get separated and lost.” He stepped forward and again, Cil moved away to keep her distance. “You won’t scream. I’ll kill you if you scream.” He licked his lips again. “And I don’t want to kill you, cuteness.” His eyes locked on Cil’s bare legs.
“Please don’t come any closer,” Cil whispered with panic in her voice. She rubbed her legs as if that would cover them.
The Lurker smiled, showing his dark, craggy teeth. “Just a few minutes, okay? You can be my cuteness for just a few minutes, can’t you?” The man shrugged off his coat.
Cil turned and crawled away. “No,” she said.
The Lurker leapt toward her.
